The Labrador Retriever is active, agile and confident with an acute sense of smell and advanced visual memory. Even tempered, with a delightful personality, the Labrador makes a wonderful companion. He needs regular exercise to curb his incredible enthusiasm and energy. His gleaming coat is highly developed to protect him against the harsh climate of his country of origin, Nova Scotia, and needs extra care and brushing. button_buynow.gif (1476 bytes) on line

The Labrador Retriever's body composition is very high in fat, originally to protect him from cold weather conditions, has finally received the attention he deserves through the latest innovation from Royal Canin: Labrador Retriever 30.
This tailor-made food addresses the unique charactistics of the breed:

The nutritional complex of Labrador Retriever 30 strengthens the skin and coat, promoting the sebhorreic balance unique to the Labrador.
Labrador Retriever 30 provides a 30% protein level, using high biological value proteins, to contribute to the building of keratin in the hair. Sulphur amino acids such as taurine and methionine are added.
Zinc, combined with linoleic acid, aids healing and promotes a shiny coat.
Labradors produce three times more sebum than other breeds, making the coat waterproof, giving the impression that the dog is hardly wet as it emerges from the water. Vitamin A contributes to the balanced production of sebum, allowing water to bead on the coat.
Vitamin B, other nutrients (niacin, panthotenic acid) and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids reinforce the protective function of the skin, and maintain a healthy, shiny coat.
jointprotection.gif (2345 bytes) Joint Protection
A strong bone structure and heavy stature combined with constant physical activity put stress on the joints. Labrador Retriever 30 protects joints by:
Maintaining ideal weight.
Chondroitin and glucosamine aid cartilage regeneration and, combined with manganese, help reduce risks of arthritis.
Omega 3 (EPA-DHA) have an anti-inflamatory action.

For Labrador Retriever puppies younger than 15 months, Royal Canin LABRADOR RETRIEVER Junior is recommended

Weight management
Extreme climates influenced the morphology of the Labrador, favouring production of fat tissue over lean mass (muscle): this protection against cold makes a rich diet suitable. In milder regions the dog's appetite has not evolved, making the management of the diet vital to avoid obesity:

A high Protein, restricted fat diet encourages lean muscle mass.
Barley starch is digested slowly giving the feeling of satiety regulating glycemia.
L-Carnitine mobilises the fats for better use by the body.
A large, low density kibble compels chewing, while cleaning the teeth.

Immune system booster
Expending energy over a long period depletes energy reserves releasing free radicals. By helping the body to rebuild its stocks of antioxidants, the oxidative effects of stress can be limited. Vitamins E and C, lutein and taurine improve natural immune defences.

Cognative function preservation
Labradors have exceptional endurance, enthusiasm for difficult tasks, can remember 50 orders and gestures, and can memorise landing places of 10 birds, bringing them back in the order that they landed.
Acute eyesight needs protection: Lutein and zeaxanthine present in the lens and retina protect against oxidative injury
A complex of antioxidants (vitamin E and C, lutein, taurine) helps prevent the effects of ageing and associated behavioural problems.
